With its paper-thin construction, flexibility and force measurement ability, the TEKSCAN FlexiForce® sensor can measure force between almost any two surfaces and is durable enough to stand up to most environments. FlexiForce® has better sensor properties, linearity, hysteresis, drift and temperature sensitivity than any other thin film force sensor.
FlexiForce® A101 and A201(latest design release) sensor is an ultra-thin, flexible printed circuit. The active sensing area is a 0.375" diameter circle at the end of the sensor. The sensors are constructed of two layers of substrate, such as a polyester film. On each layer, a conductive material (silver) is applied, followed by a layer of pressure-sensitive ink. Adhesive is then used to laminate the two layers of substrate together to form the sensor. The active sensing area is defined by the silver circle on top of the pressure-sensitive ink. Silver extends from the sensing area to the connectors at the other end of the sensor, forming the conductive leads.

The A101 and A201 can be used to trial a concept. The technology supports of the customisation of the active shape to suit an application requirement. Using Tekscan's understanding of active dot size and material a range of characteristic are available. Please discuss. Engineering charges apply.
Extending the force range:
FlexiForce Sensors are available in three standard force ranges: A201: 0-1 lb, 0-25 lb, and 0-100 lb. The dynamic range of each Sensor can be adjusted so that the 0-100 lb Sensor, for example, can measure forces up to 1000 lb. Likewise, the 0-1 lb Sensor can be adjusted to measure forces up to 5 lb, etc. To do this, some slight circuit modifications are needed. Using the recommended drive circuit, if a higher force range is required, apply a lower drive voltage and/or reduce the resistance of the feedback resistor (1 kilo-ohm min). If a lower force range is required, apply a higher drive voltage and/or increase the resistance of the feedback resistor (100 kilo-ohms max).
It is important to keep in mind that the maximum pressure any of our FlexiForce Sensors can withstand is 10,000 PSI (plastic limit). Therefore, if you are measuring a force up to 1000 lb, it is important that the entire sensing area is loaded. If only a small portion of the sensing area is loaded, then the pressures at 1000 lb will be higher than 10,000 PSI, causing permanent deformation of the Sensor.
